Academy Reflections
Summer Academy Reflections
I am extremely thankful for this opportunity to learn and grow as a teacher. I realize that not many people get the opportunity to get taught how to become better STEM teachers while getting paid in the process. This 2 week academy will exposed me to people in professions that you would not typically get a chance to hear from and speak with one-on-one.
WEEK 1

This program utilized a majority of our day, all week long. We have been looking at presentations and participating in learning activities during this week (this includes Saturday and Sunday). On the first day, we made a “Robo Arm". I enjoyed tinkering around and fixing our arm so that it was efficient in picking up the cup every time. Day 2, our speaker was awesome, the “Angry birds” activity was the highlight of my day. The activity was engaging and highly educational. On the next day, Mr. Murphy had an interesting presentation about Astronomy. On the following day, we saw a presentation on “Earth System Science”. The next day we learned about NASA Soft Moisture Active Passive and Globe: A Soil Moisture Partnership. Day 6 and 7, were all about Robotics; I did not have past experience with robotics, so this was probably the hardest presentation for me to follow.

WEEK 2

This week was still as intense as week 1, but it was a short week because we got to go home on Thursday. The week was all about our choices of what presentations we wanted to hear. I enjoyed Kristen Manning’s activity called “Speed Racing” and her second presentation was called “Hover Craft”. Her presentations were about force, gravity, and understanding Newton’s Laws. The next day, Shannon Ricles showed us a presentation on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Ricles showed us some really cool “attention getter” experiments. And last, but not least we saw a presentation about “What Principals Look For”. Sean Holleran shared a lot of great advice that would be helpful in getting you hired. Great week…I will miss everyone, I am super excited that I have had the opportunity to learn and gain experience through this program. I am ready for the extended day experience to begin!
